Body Flossing
Body Flossing
The Origin of Body Flossing®
Somewhere around 1998, a masseuse leaned over and told Arlene, ‘You can do this Yourself.’ That message gave Arlene permission to take care of herself and to trust herself. It turned out to be an empowering and beneficial moment in her life.
During the intervening years Body Flossing® became a supplement in Arlene’s quest for fitness and relief from her chronic pain. With the knowledge gained while undergoing her training to become a Pilates Instructor, the at-home practice she’d been using to relieve her pain had a framework and she started to understand how it could enhance her fitness. Over the years Arlene has helped clients with a wide variety of symptoms and ailments using these simple yet specific techniques she
developed. Body Flossing® falls within the emerging field of Fascia Research and Myofascial Self-Release that has been increasing exponentially for the last 20 years.
The aim is simple: Reduce compressive patterns, regain lost ranges of motion, eliminate pain caused by soft tissue misalignments, and train the newly released tissue (muscle, fascia, ligaments, etc.) in a better dynamic alignment to create a fluid, comfortable movement potential. Further benefits are increased range-of-motion, circulation, improved lymphatic function and stress relief. Arlene has done this herself and benefited from over 20 pain-free years in the process.
Why call it “Body Flossing® ? Use of the term “flossing” implies a frequent, if not daily, practice. We think of it as an antidote for modern restrictions to our inherent need and desire for movement.
When we train in misalignment, we strengthen our misalignments. When we train in alignment, we strengthen in alignment.
Body Flossing® is Based on a Varied-Needs Clientele
To meet the needs of her varied clientele of various ages and who had widely different pathologies and issues with movement, she developed Body Flossing® as a leveled program that can address the needs of beginners, fitness enthusiasts, hobbyists, and people with differing sensitivities. She has simplified and modified the techniques so that it is an understandable method that can be implemented throughout your life. You will also learn how to modify the techniques yourself as needed.
Specific Methods for Specific Aspects of the Fascial Anatomy:
In order for Body Flossing® or other SMR methods to be successful, Arlene believes and has observed that a good understanding of the Fascial Anatomy can help you address your own needs throughout your lifetime. You don’t have to get the books out, although that is always recommended. She teaches you in session how to interpret what you’re feeling, how to modify the method so you can advance from stiff and in pain to a happy, refreshed
body ready to move!
Body Flossing® helps prepare you for any kind of physical training. Using various implements-both simple and complex-clients are able to penetrate deep patterns to get to the source of chronic pain and misalignment. This release of chronic tightness allows clients to find healthier movement patterns that lead to lasting fitness.
Curated Tools Recommended
Because Body Flossing® developed long before it was being broadcast into even the fitness world, Arlene had to explore different means of mobilizing and releasing tight Fascia. She has curated a selection of tools with her clients over the years. She knows how these tools work in different circumstances and for different sensibilities and physical histories. These tools that have been tested with her clients for over 18 years. Not all tools work for all bodies. Her basic recommendations for beginners are below. When you sign up for her online classes, she will send you a list of tools that you will need depending on what your own Body Story is now.
What does this have to do with me?
Do you sit all the time? Do you lean on one side? Had any athletic experience? Repetitive Tasks in your life? Your Fascia changes depending on how you have inhabited your body and the accumulated experiences you’ve had. Injuries, surgeries, repetitive motion of any kind, sedentary living habits….all these will create an evolved, complex, accuumulated pattern in your fascial matrix which can often lead to chronic aches and pains as well as inhibition to exercise.
